The five-year, $86 million downtown Pensacola project will modernize the 70-year-old network delivering energy to homes and businesses in the area. Launched in March 2018, the downtown Pensacola underground modernization project will improve reliability and resiliency for current and future customers. (see map below)
This modernization of the energy network system under the streets and sidewalks involves replacement of concrete-encased duct systems, power cables, transformers and protection equipment.
Additional signage has been posted to let residents and visitors know that businesses are open during normal business hours.
Nov. 14 Update:
Tentative Holiday schedule:
At the request of the Downtown Improvement Board, Gulf Power crews have shifted their work hours to nighttime. The work will be performed Sunday – Wednesday nights from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m., avoiding weekend activities. The move to night work will add additional costs to the project budget. While crews will make every effort to minimize disturbances, please understand that construction activities are underway and there will be noise and additional lighting throughout the project area at times. Work noise may seem amplified in the quietness of night.
Information current as of Nov. 14, 2019
We are working closely with the University of West Florida’s archeology department to preserve any artifacts found in the work area, such as this old wine barrel that was discovered last year. Researchers believe the barrel formed the base of a well from the early American period.
The map below identifies where we expect crews to be excavating throughout the project. The project is currently on Palafox Street, one block south of Garden Street, where they will be working for the next three months.
