Water Heating

Water Heating

Your water heater is the second largest energy user in your home. (Your heating and air conditioning unit is the largest.) The high efficiency heat pump water heater operates by removing heat from the surrounding air and transferring it to the water in the tank. The heat pump water heater substantially reduces water heating costs while cooling and dehumidifying the surrounding area. If your water heater is located in a garage, the heat pump water heater could be an excellent alternative.

Factors that affect the amount of hot water you need include the number of people using the hot water, the size of the tank and its location. There are several ways you can reduce your hot water needs and energy requirements.

  • Change some of your family's personal energy habits. By taking shorter showers or shallower baths, hot water needs are reduced. Use a hot water wash on only those clothing items that require hot water, and always use a cold water rinse.
  • Install a more efficient system, such as a well-insulated replacement water heater, a solar unit, a heat recovery device or a heat pump water heater.
  • Consider enrolling in Gulf Power's Energy Select program and you can program your water heater to work during low-price periods every day.

A more efficient system is ideal, but insulation and a change of habits cost little or nothing—and can result in substantial savings on water heating.

Alternative Water Heating

Geothermal-Based Heat Recovery System

Using heat removed from your house by your geothermal heat pump can give you free hot water. The heat recovery device captures the waste heat that would otherwise be expelled into the ground and uses it to heat the water. When the heat recovery device is combined with a geothermal heat pump, the energy savings are substantial because you have virtually free hot water as you cool your home.

Solar Thermal Water Heating

Solar units use free energy from the sun to heat your water which can reduce your overall energy costs. The solar units are more expensive than other alternate water heating devices, but are appropriate in many applications.
