Heat pump water heaters remove unwanted heat and humidity from the surrounding air and use it to heat water. The refrigeration-based system produces cool, dehumidified air for spot cooling or to reduce the load on air conditioning systems.

Heat pump water heaters are not sized for system applications in the same way as conventional tank type water heaters or boilers. Heat pumps are designed to absorb heat from the surrounding air and gradually transfer the captured heat into a water storage tank that has been sized to meet peak demand requirements. When sized properly, heat pump water heaters will operate 12 to 16 hours per day. For sizing and system design information, see the commercial electric heat pump products page at www.hotwater.com.

Units tend to have a Coefficient of Performance (COP) around 2. This means they produce about twice as much hot water per kWh as electric resistance water heaters.

Heat pump water heaters are ideal in situations such as a commercial kitchen or laundry where there is a steady simultaneous need for cool air and hot water. They are widely used in supermarkets, hotels, and restaurants, including a number of fast food chains.

  • The best applications for HPWHs have some of the following characteristics:
    • The need for both hot water and space cooling/dehumidification is large and steady, such as in a laundry or restaurant kitchen.
    • Climate is mild and there is a need for continual mechanical ventilation, such as for humidity/moisture control or indoor air quality.
